How to Film Your Own Videos

Updated: Dec 28, 2022

When filming your own videos, there are four key things to keep in mind. You’ll want to make the lighting, background, framing, and audio top priorities to produce great quality videos. If you follow this guide, you’ll be able to enhance your social media content for sure!

Lighting

Lighting is the most important prerequisite when preparing for a video. You want to make sure that you have even, soft light on your subject’s face. The best natural light you’ll find is window light. Record your video in a location that has large windows and a lot of natural sunlight, and have your subject face towards the light. This will prevent any dark shadows on your subject’s face and create a more professional look.

However, if the subject is in front of the light source but facing away from the light, this will make them appear dark like a silhouette and the background will be too bright. See how the man with his back towards the window is now covered in shadows and the background is too bright and overexposed. In comparison, when he faces the window he has even lighting, and you can see the background behind him.

Background

Next, you’ll want to make sure that you have a clean background behind your subject. Try to remove anything that is unnecessary or makes your background look cluttered. Remove or hide cords, trash, or any other distracting elements. A solid color wall or a location related to what you’re talking about are two great background options.

Framing

When framing your video, you want to first make sure that you are recording horizontally. This will fill your frame and give your subject room to make hand gestures. Vertical videos are mostly for social media stories, like on Instagram and Snapchat, and don’t have a professional look. You’ll also want to follow The Rules of Thirds. Most cameras and cell phones have a grid that you can turn on to help improve the composition of your shot. Keep your subject’s eyes on the top line of the Rule of Thirds grid and leave a little space above their head. Watch this video for a visual explanation of framing.

Audio

Audio is the final important aspect of your video. Even if your video looks perfect, if the audio sounds bad, then your target audience might not watch it. Before recording, always make sure that the room you’ve chosen is quiet. If you can hear people on the other side of the walls, the A/C is loud, or there’s a humming noise from a refrigerator or other machinery, then you’ll want to go with a different location. Watch this video for a comparison of good v.s. bad audio quality.
